Oscilloscopes in Education - Testimonials

Louis F. DeChiaro, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Computational Science The Richard Stockton College of NJ

"They (Tektronix TDS1000 Series) are marvels of excellent design, as are all Tektronix scopes I've used over the 23-year duration of my industrial career (Bell Labs) prior to my recent retirement from industry and commencement of my second career as a college professor.

The GPIB interface on the Communications Modules is turning out to be particularly helpful. I have interfaced the scopes to desktop computers in our Electronics Lab, and we are able to send acquired waveforms up the bus to the computer, where we can do math analysis to our hearts' content.

One of our seniors is planning to build an analog simulator to generate an electronic signal that is the solution to the Duffing Equation (a well-known differential equation from Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos Theory). He is going to digitize this electronic waveform with one of the TDS1000 scopes and send it up the bus to a computer, where it will be digitally compared with the results of a numerical solution to the Duffing Equation.

Such comparison is simply not possible without an instrument like the TDS1000, and I am personally very grateful to Tektronix for designing and offering to the public instruments like the TDS1000 that have excellent performance at a price that is affordable by small, public colleges, even in times of fiscal austerity."

Les Seeley, Engineering Lab Manager of Utah State University

"With the Tektronix TDS2012 (oscillo)scope's small form factor, we were able to double the number of stations in our labs. We replaced all of our scopes and now we have a uniform set of equipment so that the students don't have to relearn a different piece of equipment for every class. We are using the new scopes with all of our undergrad classes through the grad low-frequency series classes. The new students love the scopes. They are easy to use and easy to teach. Even the mechanical students are enjoying the ease of use. Some of the older faculty rejected the idea of new equipment, but were happy with the simple layout once they had a chance to use them. Some even refused to use the new scopes until I showed them the autoset button. Now they're ecstatic about the multiple colors and simple controls. The math functions are especially useful. The WaveStar software and the GPIB-Ethernet adapters allow us to capture the waveforms for analysis and documentation."
